Question
We are rolling out a new employee wireless network that allows staff to connect using their regular SMS network username and password.
The new wireless network is:
Wi-Fi network: SMS Employee WIFI
Android phones and tablets
When connecting to SMS Employee WIFI, Android will ask for Enterprise Wi-Fi authentication settings. Configure the connection as follows:
- EAP method: TTLS
- Phase 2 authentication: PAP
- CA certificate: Trust on First Use
- Identity: Your SMS network username
Example:jsmith - Anonymous identity: same as Identity, your network username
- Password: Your regular SMS network password
If your device shows additional options, the defaults should normally be left unchanged.
When first connecting, Android may ask you to confirm or trust the authentication server certificate. This certificate is used to securely protect your username and password during Wi-Fi authentication.
Once configured, your device should remember the network and connect automatically when SMS Employee WIFI is available. If you later change your SMS network password, you may need to update the saved Wi-Fi password on your device.
iPhone and iPad
Apple devices require a small SMS Employee WIFI provisioning profile to configure the network correctly.
Unlike Android, iPhone and iPad do not expose all of the required Enterprise Wi-Fi authentication settings in the normal Wi-Fi setup screen. In particular, the required TTLS/PAP configuration must be supplied through a Wi-Fi provisioning profile.
Installing this profile on a personal device does not enroll the device in SMS device management or provide IT with control of the device. It only installs the settings required to connect to SMS Employee WIFI.
